“I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and they know me” Shepherdess with her flock by Jean – Francois Millet

A Shepherdess Hears the Voice of the Shepherd

From Fear to Faith Under the Stars

I was always afraid of the dark until I attended my sheep under the stars at lambing. I started with 8 bummer lambs whose mothers either died or rejected them, and built my flock.

As I waited, watched and prayed with the birthing ewes, Father God would talk to me.

The Divine Impression: Four Lambs

One cold January I was sitting in the barn, looking out at the starry night. A large ewe was showing signs, so I stayed. Sometime during the late hours I sensed an impression. It was not audible, but an inner knowing. “This ewe will have 4 lambs.”

Four? Ewes have anatomy for 2 lambs and usually birth 1-2 lambs. Occasionally they can have a 3rd, but 4 from a bummer lamb? No way. But still, this persistent voice.

The First Three Lambs Arrive

The first, then second lamb was born. Momma began licking, nudging. Soon they were nursing. I toweled them off. There were signs she was not finished. Within 30 minutes a third lamb was born. I busied doing what I could to help.

There were signs she was not done. Generally the afterbirth drops within 10-20 minutes to indicate the lambs have all been born. I was still new at all things lambing, but having this God impression there was another lamb.

Doubt and Uncertainty

Time passed and the ewe began to eat. I gave her water and she drank heavily. The three lambs were healthy, had suckled and settled down in the straw.

I guess I was wrong. I walked back to the house, thinking, wondering, praying.

The next day I tried to pull the afterbirth out. It would not budge. Something was not right. Honestly, I just wasn’t confident enough to insert a hand and pull out what was left. What to do? I prayed through the day.

Angels in the Barn

As the next morning dawned, I felt an urgency. I got warm water and a towel. I asked my teenage son to come to the barn (his muscles would help).

The cord was still hanging out but it looked like the straw was carefully braided into the sticky membrane. There was a rope to grasp. The path ahead was clear. We looked at each other. “I think angels have been in my barn,” I said in a whisper.

The Fourth Lamb Revealed

With hands as close together as possible we prayed, counted to three, then pulled slowly and steadily until the complete afterbirth emerged. There in the sac was a tiny lamb, too small to live but big enough that the ewe’s body did not expel it. Four lambs!

The Lesson: Believing God’s Voice

If I had believed Him I would have spared the ewe much difficulty. God had been so kind to tell me about my sheep, not very valuable in the world’s estimation, but she was my ewe. I had heard God. We must never be afraid of the dark.
