Can Dreams Have Practical Day to Day Benefit?

The answer is a Big Fat Yes! God uses dreams in the most amazing ways to protect, guide, prosper, grow us up, and provide solutions. There are so many reasons to pay close attention to our dreams because we so often find God speaking to us through them, with practical day to day benefit!

Those who have studied dreams tell us how they have inspired musical scores, inventions and solutions to problems. The sewing machine, the periodic table, movies and books, and fixes for human relationships have come when people give their dreams attention.

You should be enjoying more of the wakeful benefits from your dreams, and you can, especially when you talk with God about the matters which are important to you, and ask for His help!

I’d like to encourage you to keep on the lookout for the day to day tangible blessings which come simply from paying attention to your dreams.

God is the universal solvent for our questions and problems.

Real-Life Dream Solutions

The Contrast Button

Our friend Cheri had a computer which stopped working. Her husband looked it over and could not find a fix. In a dream Cheri was told that the problem was the contrast button. She told her husband, “God told me the problem is with the contrast button.” He said, “There is no contrast button.” But they did find it and presto, the computer was up and running again.

Cutting through the Bathtub

Our friend Loren had a stroke and it severely handicapped his mobility. His wife Peggy didn’t know how she could help him bathe. They lived with modest means, and had no financial solution.

One night she had a dream of their tub. Part of its side was cut off. She called her handyman and asked if he could cut off some of the side of their tub. He saw it was made of fiberglass and was able to cut an opening through it. Then with only a three inch hurdle Loren was able to walk into the tub and shower.

God Helps Us Recover Lost Things

The Tape Measure

We moved from one house to another and in the process I lost my brand new, 25 foot, Stanley tape measure. The new house was a fixer-upper. I really needed that tape! I looked high and low to find it, praying all along, “Lord, help me find my tape measure!”

I worked with a flimsy 10 foot measure, and kept praying.

After several weeks of looking, and praying, I dreamed I found the tape measure. I went to my office the next morning and there, in the middle of the desk it sat! My secretary had no idea how it got there.

The Sunglasses

When I was a junior in High School my parents bought me some wire rim prescription sunglasses. I used them about 25 years, and then lost them! I interrogated every family member. I looked everywhere, many times. You never know – the seventh time you look in the glove box, they might be there. I prayed many times over several weeks for their recovery.

One Sunday morning I was about to leave for church. I thought, “I’m going to jump into the car and drive straight into the rising sun without my glasses.”

I dropped down on my knees by my bed and prayed, again, “Lord, you know how I need those glasses. I’ve had them a long time. They’re valuable to me. They help me see. Please restore my glasses to me!”

I went out to car and opened the door. There on the seat in plain sight were the sunglasses! I ran back into the house and asked my wife, “Pam, did you find my sunglasses?” She replied, “No, but last night I dreamed you found them.” No one in the family knew how they got there.

Spiritual Encounters Through Dreams

“In the Morning We Will See You!”

I suddenly found myself on a large stage on a Christian music team. There were nine or ten of us on the team playing instruments and singing. Hundreds of people in the congregation were enthusiastically singing this upbeat song. I wish I could reproduce the dynamic for you. We were all singing,

In the morning we will see You

In the morning You’ll be there.

In the morning as we seek You,

Forever and forever You’ll be there!

It was an awe-inspiring thing to find myself singing a song I had never heard before, among people I had never met before, and all of us caught up in the presence of the Lord. The song reminded me of our daily expectation when we rise, and also of our ultimate hope in the resurrection of the dead;

“As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness” (Psalm 17:15).

That real encounter with God in my sleep helped me start the day with courage and hope. I’d call that practical benefit!

Prayer for Dream Guidance

HERE’S A PRAYER

Thank You, our loving God, for being the God of practicality. You bring so much benefit through dreams, visions and prophecies. Your word says, “You give to your beloved in their sleep” (Ps 127:2).

Grant us this night the gifts which will enrich us in practical ways to be useful in our wakeful hours as we live for Your Glory.

In the name of our great Revelator, Jesus Christ!
